Michiana School Registration Timeline: What Parents Need to Know

· Community · by Caleb Worm

If you are moving to South Bend, Mishawaka, or Granger with school-age children, getting them registered for school is one of your top priorities. Here is what you need to know about the school registration timeline in Michiana.

When to register

Most school districts in St. Joseph County begin registration for the upcoming school year in early spring, with ongoing enrollment through the summer. If you are moving mid-year, you can register at any time, but it helps to start the process as early as possible.

South Bend Community School Corporation

South Bend offers school choice through its magnet program, which allows students to apply to schools outside their neighborhood boundary. Magnet program applications typically open in early spring, with deadlines in March or April. If you miss the magnet deadline, your child will be assigned to their neighborhood school.

Key steps:

  • Verify your address to determine your neighborhood school
  • Research magnet programs if you want a different school
  • Submit magnet applications by the spring deadline
  • Complete enrollment with proof of address, immunization records, and birth certificate

Penn-Harris-Madison (Granger)

PHM is the primary district for Granger and portions of northeast Mishawaka. Registration for new students opens in spring. PHM does not offer magnet programs, but the district is consistently top-rated, which is why Granger is so popular with families.

School City of Mishawaka

Mishawaka serves students in the city of Mishawaka. Registration opens in spring, with ongoing enrollment through the summer. Mishawaka offers some specialized programs at certain schools.

Indiana school choice

Indiana has a school voucher program (Choice Scholarship Program) that allows eligible families to use state funds toward private school tuition. Income requirements apply. Several private schools in the South Bend area participate, including Saint Joseph High School and Trinity School at Greenlawn.

Michigan schools

If you are moving to Niles or another Michigan community, Michigan's Schools of Choice program allows enrollment across district lines in many cases. Contact the specific district for enrollment deadlines and requirements.

Tips for moving families

    • Start the registration process before you move if possible
    • Gather documents: birth certificate, immunization records, proof of address, previous school records
    • Ask about transfer credits and placement testing
    • Research transportation and bus routes for your neighborhood
    • Visit the school before your child's first day
